LOOKING AT A SET OF CHAIRS MAY NOT STRIKE INSPIRATION TO SOME, BUT IT DID TO ME
Those two chairs have so much personal meaning behind them. First, let’s talk about the names. Some of the words that crossed my mind when looking at these two chairs were empty and alone. I chose Absent for one of the pieces that I showed at my Fragments exhibition. I also included in that show a black and white different version of the chairs, this one I titled Empty & Absent. On my art page here on my website, I displayed the different versions under Fragments series.
THE PERSONAL PIECE
The Spanish translation of Absent is Ausente. The piece I titled Ausente was never to be shown, it was for me. I wanted to keep an original version of the three pieces that inspired the series. Since I started creating the series, I had different versions of several of the pieces. But these chairs haunted me since I first photographed them.
WHAT THEY SYMBOLIZED
I knew right away what the chairs symbolized. They were the two parents who were not present in my early childhood. Of course, I didn’t come to find this out until later in life, so much later that I was an adult. Ironically I would find these chairs while spending time with my father.
I’m not one to sit an dwell about the bad things in my life. In fact I’m more of a get up, dust yourself off and have more reason to push forward type of gal. I don’t advertise my mishaps or openly talk about my life but I don’t hide it either. I realize that these pieces had so much meaning behind them and I was avoiding explaining it. The people that were present at my Fragments exhibitions found out about the meaning, especially the people who purchased them.
CURRENTLY
Ausente is part of the Tenth Annual Juried Exhibition at Archway Gallery. The juror for this exhibit was Diane Griffen Gregory. The show is on view until July 28th.
